Iganga Centre for the Blind
Situated some 4 miles west of Iganga on the main road turn left for Busoga University and you will find this large building just after Bishop Willis Teacher Training College and opposite the main buildings for Busoga University.
Although visited before by people from Daventry it was not until May 2005 when a large party visited Iganga and made an emotional visit to the school that the first thoughts were given to treating this school as a major Project for the Daventry Friends to work on.
The picture below shows the headmaster Wilberforce walking across the grounds around the entrance to the large building which makes up the main part of the school. The older boys live at the rear of the large building in which is also an office, store, library and a dining room and area where students can do their homework. During the day the children walk to the nearby Demonstration School where they attend normal lessons with the students there.
At the far end of the main building is a detached building where the girls and younger boys have a dormitory. This building could be a main part of the works planned for May 2006. It needs cleaning, repair and decoration to make it more suitable for the children to live in.
This picture shows the garden in front of the main building with the girl's dormitory. It is hoped we can help to provide a garden and maybe a shelter for the children to sit in outside when they are playing.
The bedrooms are in need of cleaning, repair and
decoration to provide better living conditions. In
addition plans are being made for more substantial
repairs to foundations, walls and the roof and also
the catering facilities which leave a lot to be desired.
